Wellness Exams
At Lone Star Pet Vet we know regular wellness exams are critical to your pets’ well-being. These exams give us a chance to evaluate the overall health of your pet. Nothing compares to a good physical exam to detect potential health issues before they become serious problems.
Our mobile veterinary team’s goal is to help your pet live its best life. We start our visit with a complete nose to tail exam from the comfort of your home to decrease your pet’s fear and anxiety.
Please inform us if your pet has severe anxiety or aggression issues before making your appointment.

Preventative Care
Our goal is to help your pet live a long, healthy life through routine preventative care. Preventative care involves a physical exam and can also include diagnostic blood tests, immunizations, dental care, parasite prevention, weight management and spaying or neutering. We can often catch health issues early and manage necessary treatments with the goal of continuing a good quality of life for your pet. We recommend annual blood tests for most pets, especially our adult and senior patients. Other tests may include stool or urine analysis, heartworm, FIV/FELV testing in cats and other diagnostics as needed. We offer a wide range of diagnostic testing and, in most cases, results are available quickly for immediate treatment. Often, health issues which go undiagnosed for months can become a danger to your pet’s health and wellbeing. As with humans, your pet’s dental health is closely linked to their overall health so a proper dental exam is essential. If you have concerns about any changes in your pet’s health or behavior, be sure to bring this to our attention. Your pet relies on you to communicate with us any concerns you have about their health. You know your pet and you know when something is not quite right. We have a wonderful relationship with a local sister hospital for surgical and dental care and specialty referrals. We are here for you every step of the way!

Vaccinations
At Lone Star Pet Vet, we believe that one of the most important aspects of caring for your pet’s health is vaccinating them against specific diseases. There are a variety of viral and bacterial infections that can infect your pet, so proper vaccination is vital to protecting them from serious illness. We recommend the AAHA vaccination protocol. We will be happy to discuss the benefits of protecting your pet with vaccinations, as well as, provide you with information on the required vaccinations for your pet.
We can also perform titres through our lab to check for protective immunity, if needed. To stay on track, we will create reminders for your future vaccine appointments. Minor symptoms can be common after your pet receives a vaccine, such as lethargy, slight fever, pain or swelling at the injection site. These mild symptoms will generally subside within one or two days. If your pet experiences a more serious reaction such as facial swelling, difficulty breathing, hives, vomiting or diarrhea, or collapse, call us right away.
You will need to seek care at your nearest emergency veterinary facility. If your pet has ever experienced a vaccine reaction in the past, please notify us prior to your appointment. If you are experiencing a medical emergency with your pet we recommend taking them to Central Texas Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Hospital at 4434 Frontier Trail – (512) 892-9038.

Parasite Prevention
At Lone Star Pet Vet, we emphasize the importance of parasite prevention. Successfully protect your pet through routine diagnostic testing, blood testing and preventative flea, tick and heartworm medication. We also recommend routine tests for intestinal parasites.
Our pets can easily become infected with intestinal parasites. In Texas, we have a whole host of parasites we need to be proactive about protecting our pets against. The idea of your pet contracting a parasite is a disturbing thought. It is also a medical issue that can have serious consequences if not prevented. Parasites pose a variety of health risks for our pets and sometimes for us too by living in the same environment.
Did you know that heartworms can kill dogs and cats?
It is important to give your pet heartworm prevention year-round. There is a heartworm prevention called Proheart that comes in an injectable form lasting 6 or 12 months, but we do not offer it at this time. There are many other good, oral preventatives available through our online pharmacy at competitive prices with many manufacturers offering significant rebates. We would be very appreciative if you’d shop at our online pharmacy instead of the big box corporate stores. We offer convenient delivery right to your door. We will do our best to keep preventative medications readily available for your pet.

Microchipping
At Lone Star Pet Vet we are happy to offer microchipping. Every year, thousands of pets go missing. In fact, one in three pets will go missing at some point during their lifetime. Not knowing where your pet is or how to help locate them can be such a helpless feeling. There is a simple and effective way to ensure your pet’s safe return home. Microchipping is a standard procedure that implants a tiny chip, about the size of a grain of rice, underneath your pet’s skin. It is a nearly painless and fast procedure that is completely safe. It is not GPS tracking.
The microchips we use include free lifetime registration and they are compatible with international travel requirements. Be sure to always keep your contact information current in order to help with your pet’s safe return home. It is also important to note that it is not uncommon for microchips to migrate under the skin. If you ever find a lost pet, please take them to the nearest shelter or veterinary clinic and be certain to scan the entire pet for a microchip.

Pain Management
Our pets can sometimes suffer with pain just like we do- surgical pain, muscle pain, joint pain, tumors, even growing pains. We know that seeing your pet experience pain is very distressing. Sometimes pet owners don’t even realize their pet is in pain. Changes in pet behavior can often be very subtle. There can be many reasons a pet would “slow down” or “lay around more than usual”. For this reason, we will evaluate your pet for pain and do whatever we can to keep your pet comfortable. Age does not have to be a disease. We want your pet to stay as active as possible, for as long as possible. We have many different choices when it comes to treating pain.
There are useful supplements and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which are very effective in managing pain. We can also prescribe stronger medications or groups of medications that work well together. Before starting on pain medications, we will take a blood sample to check for any other underlying health issues and to ensure your pet’s safety in taking these medications.

Puppy and Kitten Care
Congratulations! Getting a new puppy or kitten is very exciting. You both have so much to look forward to. Nothing compares to the snuggles, companionship and support that your new pet will provide your entire family. However, puppies and kittens also need a great deal of care and attention and they are a long term commitment. Our oldest feline patient lived to be 28 years old! A true testament to his owner’s loving care. At Lone Star Pet Vet, we are here to help you with your new bundle of joy. We will educate you in pet care, nutrition, health care and immunization schedules. We do recommend that no puppy play in public parks or dog parks until all vaccines are completed to avoid highly contagious diseases. We will help to remind you when your pet’s next appointment should take place. Feel free to schedule your appointment in advance and write down any questions you have for us ahead of your visit.
Hospice and Euthanasia
Saying goodbye to a beloved pet can be one of the most difficult things a pet owner can experience. The process can be emotionally and mentally draining. We don’t want you to feel alone making this decision at the end stages of a pets’ life. We are available to assist you in making the right decision with a quality of life assessment and do what we can to ease their transition and support you during this emotional time. Knowing when the time is right can be difficult. There are many factors that go into deciding to euthanize a pet but every pet owner is inevitably faced with making that tough decision. We want to be there alongside you to help in any way we can. If you have any special requests, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your wishes. Dealing with the end of a beloved pets’ life is heartbreaking. We want to do whatever we can to make this transition as peaceful as possible by offering in home euthanasia as well as cremation services.
